TASTER'S CHOICE
Organic brand is tops for bean-cheese burritos
by Carol Ness
International flavors are pepping up supermarket freezer aisles, and frozen
burritos of all flavors and sizes are part of the trend.
There are snack-size 4-ouncers that are packaged 10 to a bag,
and brawny 10- ounce "restaurant-style" ones that
are wrapped in paper. They come in all the popular combinations
of beef, chicken, cheese and/or beans, wrapped in a flour tortilla.
Taster's Choice tried eight brands of bean-cheese burritos,
the most common variety. We heated them in a microwave according
to package directions.
The winning burrito was Amy's ($1.99 for 6 ounces, Whole Foods),
made with organic beans, rice, vegetables and cheddar cheese.
One panelist praised it as having "nice spice, some kick," but
another thought the whole wheat tortilla didn't go well with
the filling, and yet another wanted more filling. Three tasters
would buy this brand, and two wouldn't.
