TASTER'S CHOICE : One chili stands alone
by Tara Duggan

Canned chili is a good example of how vegetarian foods are quickly becoming mainstream. When we conducted a tasting of vegetarian chili four years ago, we found only seven brands. But this time around we found 11 canned vegetarian chilis, labeled mild or regular.
Since there were so many to choose from, we left out any frozen or jarred varieties for this tasting. Some products contain soy protein in place of meat.

Amy's Organic Chili (14.7 ounces, $1.99-$2.55 at many markets). One panelist thought it tasted like a "childhood fave," while another thought it had good texture.

The panel also tasted Bearitos, Chilli Man, Dennison's, Greene's Farm, Natural Touch, ShariAnn's and Trader Joe's, but they scored too low to rate.
