Outta the Box
by Leslie Baldacci
Amy's tastes great, but all that sincerity!
Outta would have sampled Amy's organic frozen foods sooner,
but didn't feel worthy. This is obsessively wholesome fare.
All organic ingredients, no meat, fish, poultry or eggs. Filtered
this. Soy that. And then there's the part about Amy, who isn't
even the chef!
"After the birth of our daughter Amy in 1987, we found there
was little time to prepare the wholesome nutritious food we
normally ate. Realizing there were others like ourselves we
et up Amy's Kitchen to produce delicious, nourishing frozen
meals for health conscious people too busy to cook."
All this personal info, but no signature on the box from Amy's
parents (just a post office box in Petaluma, Calif.) was too
distracting for poor Outta, who wondered whether Amy had siblings
who felt slighted or whether they, too, had a line of prepared
foods named after them and whether Amy, who would now be 14,
ever grabbed a burger at the McDonald's drive-thru or whether
she grew up to be as persnickety as her parents.
So you can see why it took a while to get around to sampling
Amy's.
But anyway, how's the grub? Pretty good! The shepherd's pie
was a delicious mixture of tomatoes, garbanzo beans, onions,
celery, leeks, turnips and mushrooms topped with mashed potatoes.
There's soy milk in there, too, and sea salt and filtered water.
The organic macaroni and cheese microwaved nicely. It contains
low-fat milk, cheddar cheese (without animal enzymes or rennet)
and butter. The macaroni had real body; it was dense and flavorful.
Very filling.
