Famous Vegetarians

Think Vegetarianism is just a passing fad? Think again! There are hundreds of famous vegetarians of the present and the past. Here's some very interesting insights into the world of vegetarian celebrities.

Joss Stone

Joss Stone

Singer, songwriter, actress, and vegetarian since birth.

In 1987, Jocelyn Even Stoker was born in Kent, England to vegetarian parents; she quickly found a passion for both music and animals. Stone grew up listening to a wide variety of music, which greatly influenced her powerful and soulful vocal style. At the young age of 15, she traveled to New York City where she landed a record deal. A year later she released her first album, which achieved great international success. Over the years, Joss Stone became one of the most successful female British artists of her generation, and has become well-known for her barefoot performances.

Stone has said that although she was born a vegetarian, she never felt forced. “A wise man once said, 'Animals are my friends, and I'm not in the habit of eating my friends.' That is exactly how I feel." She rescued three of her five cats while driving along the road, and was even named 2005’s “World’s Best Dog Owner” by the North Shore Animal League. Joss Stone has devoted herself to animal causes and rescue efforts, and continues to live a healthy vegetarian lifestyle.

Anne Hathaway

Being a vegetarian isn’t always easy, something 28-year-old American actress Anne Hathaway knows a lot about. She’s a self-proclaimed “commitment-shy” vegetarian, which many vegetarians can relate to. But since reading “Eating Animals” by Jonathon Safran Foer, she can no longer support eating fish after knowing how they are farmed and caught.

While filming the movie “One Day” in London, Anne admitted to having a few difficulties being a vegetarian. But overall, feels British food has improved for vegetarians since she first went to film a movie at the age of 19.

But like most people, Anne still loves dessert. She relies on New York bakery BabyCakes to satisfy her sweet tooth and her diet, with delicious vegan cakes and dessert options.

Anne enjoys spending time with her chocolate lab Esmeralda. She is also committed to charity work, including the Creative Coalition, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, and the Human Rights Campaign.
